Boomer dad gives me advice on retirement this past weekend. Boomer Story

I'll be 55 and I'm seriously considering retiring at the end of this year. My parents are conservative and previous conversations have included topics such as young people shouldn't get social security and Medicare.
  • 03
When I asked why shouldn't everyone enjoy the same benefits that you enjoy? They just say they'll have something, just not social security??? Anyway, my Dad worked for the same company I work for. He retired in 1999 at age 50 with 32 years seniority.
  • 04
My dad tells me that I should continue to work because it's a really good job and I'm making good money. So I asked my dad what year did you retire?
  • 05
He says 1999 proudly. Claims he's getting close to being retired as long as he was at work. Then I asked how old he was when he retired? He says I was 50.
  • 06
I said I'll be close to 56 when I get my 30 years and I'm tired of getting my kicked every day I go to work. I work a physical skilled trades job and have had a career that has had quite a few injuries that have required surgeries.
  • 07
Then he says yeah but you're still young and have a lot of years left in you... So basically it's so awesome that he has enjoyed 25 years of retirement but who cares about me...

One of the latest things is that nobody deserves to retire until you reach 70 years old. Just in time to die. So tired of this.

13 Years _Then_Banned OP 11 hr. ago Yes that's exactly what the sentiment is. "We worked our whole lives and put money into social security and Medicare"

BeardOfRiker 11 hr. ago Every worker in America has worked and funded those programs, young and old alike. Blow their tiny minds by telling them undocumented workers contribute billions to SS via the payroll tax and by law will never see a dime of it.

brentsg 11 hr. ago You need to keep working and pay into Social Security, but not use it yourself.. for reasons.

Sci Fi Reality 11 hr. ago Not ironic... hypocritical is the word you're looking for. They are all hypocrites. My dad had the same career path yours did. Retired before I finished high school and drilled into me to go college and get a degree so I don't have to work a job that will destroy my body like his did. Then turns around and calls me a pansy for having an office job like he didn't push me in that direction.

Junior-Order-5815 9 hr. ago I love my Dad, he was a good man and even though it was hard for him he really tried to understand why my $1200 rent was so much harder to afford than his $300 mortgage. But man, the wry smirk he got when he'd give me the "do as I say not as I do" line is infuriating to remember.

Cassandraburry2008 11 hr. ago What hypocrites. Sounds like they're all for socialism, but only for themselves. 57 Reply Share 13_Years Then_Banned OP 11 hr. ago Apparently it's not socialism when you're enjoying government benefits... only when others do.

tippycanoo 11 hr. ago It's apples and oranges. In his time one income supported a household, paid for a house and allowed for retirement. Now you need 2 incomes for longer to do less. It's like grandparents giving their grandkids $20 for birthday and thinking it's generous. That's how out of touch they are.

Ok_Discipline_3764 10 hr. ago Anyone who votes to raise retirement age should automatically have to work until that age or start working again if they're old as 29 Reply Share namemtogsdom . 2 hr. ago Nah just need to have those years of benefits deducted.

Dudeist-Priest - 10 hr. ago Sorry your dad is a POS. I can't even imagine telling my kids they don't deserve something I got, and honestly, I WANT BETTER for them.

Sovereigntyranny. 10 hr. ago Yeah, I don't know why boomers are SO about young people retiring. I told a boomer one time that after I got laid off, I retired for a bit; they got I about it and told me I was too young to retire.

They always hate it whenever Gen X and beyond end up rightfully earning to have it easier than them. Forget what your dad says. As long as you have enough money, you go for it. I hope everything goes like you want it to!
